Faucibus Conterdum Posuere Lorem

Padme is my youngest fur baby. Her older brother is a cat who would love to come hiking with us, but he’s gotta guard the castle. Padme is a 4-and-a-half-year-old Rottweiler/Husky mix.

She’s been with me since she was 9 weeks and is so ridiculously smart. We’ve been going to the woods since she was old enough to do a half mile.

Padme loves to jump and play and explore when we hit the trails and is the best hiking buddy I could ever ask for. All she asks in return is for the windows to be down at least a little bit at all times regardless of the weather.

If you stay with me and keep reading my take on these trails you might come to the opinion (the same one I have) that I am a much harder critic of these trails for Padme than for me. Padme is my baby. I was blessed with her little baby face when I was living with her other mother in a house with a fenced back yard in the burbs.

For the last year, though, she, her cat brother, Leo, and I have lived in a tiny apartment. I work a regular workday outside of the house Monday through Friday. She gets big walks morning and evening plus pottie breaks, but she doesn’t get free runs too often during the week. So, when the weekends roll around, my priority is giving her as much outside fun time as I can.

I’m a 51 year-old trans-masc lesbian, who’s hikes as a coping technique in this world. I grew up playing in the woods – climbing trees, swinging on vines, fishing, pretending to be a ninja. I spent a lot of time in the woods alone with my imagination and a sense of awe.

When I found myself as an adult, suffering with depression and anxiety and looking for what was missing, I decided to go back to the beginning, when I felt most like myself. Out to the woods, I went.

Over the last year, I’ve been hiking more and more and my body is responding. I’ve found myself again, and I get to flex my muscles in ways that feel natural when Padme and I are out in the woods.
